[Developer’s Note] Notice on the Story Renewal and Steam Delay

Hello Masters.
This is Hyunmoon Soo, Producer of OUTERPLANE.
With the July 21 update, OUTERPLANE will introduce the Story Renewal, a new starting point for the game’s story.
This update will add a new tutorial and new Areas 1-3, beginning the story with a new protagonist and new starting Heroes.
Before we go into the details of the update, I would like to first address what many of you are likely most curious about.
■ Regarding K’s Story
After the Story Renewal was announced, one of the biggest concerns we saw was about K, the existing protagonist.
“Does this mean K will no longer appear?”
“Will the Main Story we have followed so far disappear?”
Many players shared these concerns with us.
To answer clearly, this Story Renewal is not an update meant to remove K’s story or replace it entirely.
The Main Story that has followed K so far will remain in the game under the name [Origin Story]. New players will also be able to continue into K’s story naturally after playing through the renewed story.
K’s story is currently moving toward the middle of Season 4, and we are committed to completing the story we originally planned through to its conclusion.
K is still, and will continue to be, an important protagonist of OUTERPLANE.
■ Why We Are Introducing the Story Renewal
Then why are we starting a new story?
The biggest reason is OUTERPLANE’s first impression.
As we continued operating the game and reviewing various data, we found that many new players were leaving very early after starting the game. There was no single reason behind this.
First, the current tutorial and early areas were created a long time ago. Compared to our newer characters and more recent presentation quality, the difference in visuals and production value had become noticeable.
The early story was also structured around following K’s story from a third-person perspective. This felt somewhat different from the direction many modern anime-style RPGs have taken, where players can more naturally see themselves as the protagonist.
Another factor is that many players now first encounter OUTERPLANE through ads and promotional content featuring newer characters and more dynamic scenes.
However, once they actually start the game, it takes a considerable amount of time before they can meet those characters. This created a gap between the experience players expected from the promotional material and the experience they had in the early game.
As a result, many new players were leaving before they could experience what truly makes OUTERPLANE appealing.
We felt this was something we had to address for OUTERPLANE to continue growing long-term. Since last winter, we have been preparing this renewal together with our scenario writers.
■ Direction of the Story Renewal
The new story introduced through this renewal is not a rewrite of the existing story.
This new story begins in Mirsha after Season 4. It will serve as the starting point for expanding the world of OUTERPLANE going forward.
Players will take on the role of a new protagonist and begin their adventure together with the new starting Heroes.
As the story progresses, players will observe [World Memory], allowing them to directly experience the path K has walked in the past.
In other words, K’s story is not disappearing. It will continue naturally as an important history and record that the new protagonist must witness.
The core goal of this renewal is to connect the new story and the existing story organically within one shared world.
■ New Story Mode Flow
The new Story Mode flow will be as follows.
- Players will meet the new protagonist and new starting Heroes in the new tutorial.
- Players will begin a lighter, more enjoyable early adventure together with the new Heroes.
- In Area 3, players will observe World Memory, which unlocks Origin Story. The reason for viewing and following K’s story will also be introduced naturally.
- After that, players will continue through Origin Story in Story Mode as before, experiencing K’s story as part of the overall narrative.
Through this structure, we want new players to understand the world of OUTERPLANE more naturally, while also helping them feel immersed in the existing story as an important part of that world’s history.
■ Additional Changes Included in the Renewal
Alongside this renewal, we have also refined parts of the game’s overall story structure. Some areas still need further improvement, and we will continue addressing them through future updates.
- In-game tutorial dialogue, excluding the main tutorial itself, has been fully revised around the new starting Heroes.
- Conversation scenes featuring the new protagonist and new starting Heroes have been added to each area while observing K’s Origin Story. These scenes are intended to make it clearer who the current story is centered on. This work has currently been completed up to Season 1, and will be expanded to other seasons in stages.
- Some of K’s early dialogue and expressions, which many players had shared feedback on, have been refined to feel more natural.
- Story progression for in-game content such as Skyward Tower, Terminus Isle, and Irregular Extermination Project has also been restructured around the new protagonist and their companions.
- For Event Stories where the previous protagonist, the player, appeared in the past, additional intro and ending conversation scenes have been added so that players can naturally understand that they are the same character as the current protagonist.
- Some Event Stories have also been updated so that the new protagonist observes events that happened in the past, making the timeline easier to follow.
■ Future Story Updates
This renewed opening is the starting point for a new story.
Going forward, we plan to continue expanding the story of the new protagonist and the new starting characters.
At the same time, we will continue updating K’s story, which has not yet reached its conclusion, in line with our development schedule.
K’s story will conclude through Season 4 in the direction we originally planned. Even after that, it will continue to serve as an important foundation for expanding the world of OUTERPLANE and connecting to new stories.
Depending on the development schedule and update plans, we may alternate between updates for the new story and Season 4, or continue them sequentially once the renewed story currently in preparation has reached a sufficient volume.
■ Early Notice Regarding the Steam Launch Delay
We sincerely apologize to all players who have been waiting for the Steam PC version.
The Steam platform review process is currently taking longer than expected, making it difficult for us to launch the Steam version in late July as previously announced.
We are doing our best to bring the Steam version to you in a complete and stable state within August, and we kindly ask for your understanding.
■ Closing
I have worked on K’s story for a long time, and I care deeply about the character.
For that reason, we have no intention of ending K’s story lightly or treating it as something secondary.
However, for OUTERPLANE to continue long-term, we believed it was necessary to create a new starting point that would help new players enter the game more easily and feel its appeal more quickly.
This Story Renewal is the result of that careful consideration.
For new players, we will do our best to provide a more enjoyable first step into OUTERPLANE.
For those of you who have been with us for a long time, we will work to show you a broader world of Mirsha and new stories that expand upon it.
We hope you will look forward to OUTERPLANE as K’s story and the new protagonist’s story continue forward together.
Thank you.
